How Carbon Health is building the world’s largest hospital thanks to Forest

With Emily McGovern (Practices Manager), Greg Burrell (Director of Medicine) and Eren Bali (CEO)

With doctors accessible online through a mobile app and in-person at their clinics, Carbon Health is taking a fresh take on healthcare. Designed by Tom Berry, Greg Burrell & Eren Bali, Carbon Health is in process of becoming the world’s largest hospital. Thanks to integration with pharmacies, labs, insurance providers and specialists, Carbon Health allows patients to chat with doctors, follow-up on treatment plans and prescriptions, schedule appointments, make payments, see their medical records and much more (like having prescriptions delivered to your door), all through one app.

No paperwork, no hassle. You can sign-up in minutes — all you need is an insurance card — on the app and get instant scheduling & payment. No more paper bills. Carbon Health is simple and delivers a seamless and comprehensive healthcare experience, in and out of the doctor’s office. From a doctor perspective, the app powers the technology to run a modern healthcare practice, removing the burden of administration, such as insurance reimbursement, payment collection, and patient acquisition, reducing overhead overall for the private practice.

“There should be a universal admin tool which isn’t specific to the language you’re coding your app with”

Eren Bali, CEO @ Carbon Health

During his previous experience at Udemy, Eren and his tech team tried and set-up several admin tool products. At some point, they switch from a custom admin (in php) to Django Admin (Python) and unfortunately, they had to reimplement everything. Lot of time was lost during the process 😞

While Eren was working on Carbon Health admin interface, he started to look online for a universal admin interface tool, for him to not spend too much time developing it. Expectations were high because he knew from his previous experience how important an admin interface is for any company which want to grow fast.

Simplifying practices onboarding process

The process of onboarding of a new practice is fairly simple, as described on your right. Emily (Practices manager) uses Forest admin interface to set-up each new practices to Carbon Health database via a summary view (picture above). She can easily add contact information (practice name, address, telephone numbers, …), select the practice equipment via pre-defined lists, and also associate staff members and doctors’ list to the practice. No need to switch from several web pages, she only uses one.

Managing doctors availabilities

Through the same UX friendly interface, she also helps doctors to onboard by adding their contact information, specialties, appointment slots, … All these information will be directly implemented in the database and accessible at anytime by every staff members allowed, when needed. Thanks to Forest’s Layout Editor and Drag & Drop features, she is, for exemple, able to manage the practice calendar view in collaboration with the doctors and staff members. Adding or modifying an patient slot and all the information related is fast and easy.

To keep it simple, there are two applications. The one developed by Carbon Health team to their customers (doctors, practice staff members, and patients) and Forest admin interface used by the exact same team to easily access and manage all the data. While we are providing them the best technical solution for their back-office, they can focus on developing the best healthcare experience ever.

First rate customer support

Emily is also using her Forest admin interface to help the customer support team managing patients information, like passwords resets, phone number modification or appointment cancelation when needed. All these actions are technically defined (we called them Smart Actions at Forest) and easily accessible via a dedicated button. In a single clic, she can activate process or access and modify patient informations, Carbon Health prefer to secure.

Thanks to the patient summary view, staff members and doctors can also access information at anytime, especially before a visit. During (and after) the visit, they can check & modify complaints and procedure data directly through the interface. Then ePrescription can be updated.

One of the amazing pros of the concept (and there are many), you can ask for prescriptions’ delivery to your door. Indeed, your ePrescription is automatically sent to the closest pharmacy, depending on the address you add to your profile, right after your visit. A notification is sent to Carbon Health when the prescription is received at the pharmacy. Before the package preparation starts, an ID is created in order to track the pharmaceuticals during the shipping. Emily can follow each step of the process i.e. preparation, packaging and delivering via Forest interface, and access all the related information. The entire "ePrescription" workflow is built within Forest so Carbon Health team can have an overall view of this external process. It largely explains why prescriptions are being sent to your place in no time!

Conclusion

Forest enabled Carbon Health Tech team to save a considerable amount of time (they were able to allocate their energy on the product) and help the Business & Operations teams to get enough autonomy to grow and support the company eco-system fast since day one. Forest's advanced workflow management tool allowed them to automate crucial tasks in their business value chain, increasing productivity globally and ensuring a second to none service towards their clients.
